Emergency Crews Rescue Residents After Central Australia Floods
Severe thunderstorms on Wednesday caused water levels to rise sharply, submerging several streets and low-level causeways, as reported by Australian media. Officials have since downgraded the emergency alert but continue to advise residents to avoid floodwaters.
While river levels are slowly dropping, authorities warned that currents remain strong and could pose risks. Northern Territory Police confirmed that emergency teams conducted multiple rescue operations, including one involving a woman swept off a roadway.
The Department of Education announced that government schools would remain open to support emergency personnel and essential workers, while recommending that other families keep children at home.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole noted that flooding was intensified by the Todd River, which is usually dry but was already flowing prior to the overnight heavy rain. “There's no blame to be placed here on anybody, there was not a lot of warning,” he said.
The recent floods follow days after the Daly River reached a major flood level of 14 meters, prompting evacuations in surrounding areas.
