Flooding in Alice Springs Prompts Rescues
Intense storms on Wednesday caused a significant spike in water levels across the central Australian community, inundating numerous streets and all low-lying crossings, a broadcaster reported.
Officials have since reduced the severity level of the emergency alert, though they continue to advise residents to steer clear of floodwaters.
While water levels are slowly declining, authorities warned that floodwaters are still moving through the area and could contain powerful currents.
Northern Territory Police confirmed that rescue teams conducted several operations, including assisting a woman who was swept from a roadway.
Public schools will stay open to assist emergency workers and critical staff, the Department of Education announced, while recommending that other parents keep their children at home.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole explained that the situation was intensified because the usually dry Todd River had already been flowing prior to the heavy rainfall overnight.
“There's no blame to be placed here on anybody, there was not a lot of warning,” he said.
